Duke looks to turn old technology into new art

Time moves quickly, and so does technology. What was once state of the art will soon become simply art behind a building on Duke University's campus.

Eight satellite dishes are clustered together behind an arts building, and rather than remove them, the school has decided to repurpose them.

Durham artist Bethany Bash wants to turn the obsolete satellite dishes into something valuable once again.

Kelsey Graywill, a senior at Duke, agrees. She is overseeing the project.

"They're kind of like big circular canvasses, so the natural inclination there was, so why don't we paint them instead of tearing them down and sort of make them their own unique park," she said.

The dishes once captured educational programming and streamed it into Duke classrooms. But the internet now delivers the same service straight to student laptops.

Bash said, "I really want to participate in the project but was having trouble coming up with ideas inside my studio."
